I'm a fourth-generation Céline Dion fan.
My mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother all worship the French Canadian singer and her considerable vocal talents—and passed that adoration on to me. Both my twin sister and I danced to Céline ballads at our weddings, her to The Power of Love and me to Have You Ever Been In Love. And when my grandmother spent her final days in the hospital, we sat together and listened to I'm Alive, which was playing the very last time I saw her. To this day, that song reminds me that she's still by my side.
If my family is an example, Dion has always been there for her fans in their happiest, saddest, most trying, and triumphant times. Her music is the soundtrack to so many lives, and her voice is a source of strength for millions of people around the world. For me, Dion's voice elicits an emotional response that's hard to describe.
For 17 years—while she was releasing new albums, going on tour, and performing in her Las Vegas residency—little did her fans know that the singer was facing a battle of her own. What started as voice spasms became more devastating than she could have ever imagined. After almost two decades of debilitating health struggles, Dion was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome, or SPS.
In a Prime Video documentary, I Am Céline Dion, the icon bravely pulls back the curtain on her fight with SPS, filming some of her most vulnerable moments. She is the embodiment of courage in the film and in life. Ahead are some of her most powerful quotes from the documentary.
"Even though I've traveled the world, I didn't really see anything."

The documentary begins with one of Dion's twins interviewing her and asking her questions, including, "If you had to go anywhere, where would you go?" She answers, "Do you believe me if I tell you that even though I've traveled the world, I didn't really see anything? Strange, isn't it? Sometimes, we call that the price to pay."
"The people, I miss them."
In one of her first quotes in the documentary, Dion makes it clear how much her fans mean to her.
"My voice was the conductor of my life."

"I was following it. You lead the way. I follow you," she continues. "When your voice brings you joy, you're the best of yourself."
"It's not hard to do a show; it's hard to cancel a show."
We also start to understand more about what drove the singer to keep her health challenges private for so long.
"I knew they wanted Céline Dion."

As it became harder for the singer to reach the notes she had always been able to reach, the pressure of having one of the best voices in history and living up to the fame of her voice in its own right weighed on her.
"When a girl loves her shoes, she always makes them fit."
As Dion walks through her fashion archive, a giant warehouse space filled with tour costumes and red-carpet looks, she makes a highly relatable proclamation about shoes.
"If you want to go fast you go alone and if you want to go far you go together."

While talking about her band and backup singers, Dion says, "We grew together, and we bonded together because we loved music, we had respect for each other, we became a family, and I became who I am because of all these people."
"A performance is way bigger than a song."
While singing may come naturally, Dion still pours her heart into every performance, giving 100% to every show.
"I needed medicine to function. The show must go on."

As her symptoms became more frequent and more severe, Dion was given a near-fatal dose of medication in order to continue performing—but at a hefty cost. "Sometimes I would point my microphone to the audience, and I would make them sing it," she says. "There were moments when I cheated. And [there were] also moments where we had to stop the show. And I never came back. The lie is too heavy now."
"If I can't run I'll walk. If I can't walk I'll crawl. But I won't stop."
Her last quote is a hopeful one for her fans—and this much is for certain: We'll be right here waiting for her when she's ready to get back on stage.
