Julie Bowen Helped Sarah Hyland Through an Abusive Relationship

While the hit sitcom Modern Family isn't on the airwaves anymore, there's no denying that the cast is still staying in touch—and reflecting on their close-knit relationships. The beloved sitcom introduced viewers to actors like Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter, along with their on-screen mom, played by Julie Bowen. In a new interview, Bowen revealed how she helped her co-star during an abusive relationship, proving that sometimes, on-screen dynamics manage to make their way off-screen.

On the June 3 episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, Bowen opened up about a situation with Hyland and her ex, Matthew Prokop. At the time, court documents showed that Hyland accused Prokop of physically and verbally abusing her, including a choking incident in 2014.

"I was a responsible adult that happened to be around at the right time," Bowen explained. "I mean, I'm sure another responsible adult would have done the exact same thing. I just love her. I look at them all like my kids. I love them."

E! News notes that after the incident, Hyland asked Bowen to come to her aid. After Prokop allegedly "flipped out," Bowen came to Hyland's house and suggested that she leave for her own safety. Afterward, Hyland was granted a three-year restraining order.

"In every aspect of life they're the best for me," she told People of her relationship with her cast mates at the time. "We're always there for each other. And it's wonderful. I love them."

Hyland married Wells Adams in 2022, and he is currently supporting her as she tackles the role of Audrey in the Broadway revival of The Little Shop of Horrors. During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, she explained that he's grown attached to the accent she adopted for the show.

“I don’t do the Ellen Greene accent from the film, or exactly like Kerry Butler from the revival, but it just kind of came about,” she said. “My husband was asking me on the phone, ‘Do it for me.’ So, I gave him a little preview over the phone of the accent and it was the wildest reaction I ever could have imagined. He goes, ‘This is going to be very sexual for me.’”
