PHOTO: SkimsWhy We Love It: We have to give it to Kim K for creating one of the best bodysuits we’ve ever put on. Contouring without feeling as restrictive as classic shapewear, we found that the brand’s signature sculpting fabric molds perfectly to the body and nicely cinches the waist, yet remains super soft and comfortable. It’s also quite supportive, eliminating the need for a bra for both large and small chests. But where this bodysuit shines is its quality and durability, earning perfect scores across the board (we were pretty blown away, to say the least). Not too thick or too thin, the material feels high-quality, like a nicer cotton T-shirt, and after multiple washes, we saw zero shrinking, stretching, fraying, or pilling. In fact, it still looks brand new after three washes. Overall, it’s a great style for everyday wear—especially given the price point and variety of colors available (we’re already planning to shop a few more).
Who It’s For: As the name implies, this bodysuit does a pretty solid job of fitting bodies of all shapes and sizes. Inclusive sizing aside (it’s available in sizes XXS–4XL), the stretchy material ensures a perfect fit without ever sheering out. We did notice that it was slightly shorter in the torso than others we tested, which caused the leg openings to ride up and gusset snaps to feel a little uncomfortable at times, which is something to keep in mind if you have a longer torso (we recommend sizing up).

PHOTO: H&MWhy We Love It: For a long-sleeved bodysuit that won’t break the bank, this style from H&M is a supremely comfortable option for day-to-day. It’s crafted from a stretchy scuba-like material that’s pretty durable, and we noticed no changes in shape or material throughout the testing period, including three washes. Still, as a budget-friendly option, we noticed that it fell a bit short in terms of quality. While the material holds up, it’s very thin; it’s too sheer to go braless, yet any bra we wore with it was visible. That being said, this isn’t a bodysuit that shapes, cinches, or smooths, but it’s a great, comfy layering piece to have in your closet.
Who It’s For: If you’re seeking a nonrestrictive, no-frills bodysuit to layer into your outfits, you can’t go wrong with this budget-friendly pick. It’s suitable for a range of heights and torso lengths and snaps effortlessly and comfortably at the gusset, even for taller folks. However, it runs quite large, so petite body types may be unable to find a size that fits properly.
Material: Polyester, spandex | Size: XS–XXL | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: WolfordWhy We Love It: We scored this Wolford bodysuit perfect fives in every category; it’s that good. For starters, it’s unbelievably comfortable. At first glance, we worried the material would be tight and constricting but were delightfully surprised at how stretchy and breathable it is—we could stretch, dance, and move our bodies freely without ever feeling restricted. Still, it’s nicely fitted, accentuates the figure, and looks incredibly sleek (something we’d expect from a luxury label like Wolford). The quality and durability are also top-tier, passing all wash and wear tests with flying colors. While the price tag is steep, we think it’s well-earned.
Who It’s For: The high-quality material manages to snatch us in all the right places without being the least bit restrictive, so we’d say this is a safe bet for most body types (though sizing doesn’t go below an XS or above and XL). The length was perfect for a person who is 5 feet, 6 inches tall, and given its stretchiness, we’d say it would probably suit a wide range of heights and torso lengths.
At $295, it’s one of the more expensive options out there, but if you’re willing to splurge on a bodysuit that’s comfortable, breathable, and of gorgeous quality that will last you for some time, this one is worth the investment.
Material: Cotton, polyamide, elastane | Size: XS–XL | Cut: Brazilian | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: ShapermintWhy We Love It: If you love the compressive features of shapewear but don’t love the look, this Shapermint bodysuit is a great option. Given all the color options and its simple, seamless design, it looks more like your everyday layering tank. We found this style to have great shaping and smoothing abilities—it helped tackle concerns like “muffin top” and nicely snatched us at the waist, yet we could still move freely; it never felt like wearing a corset. We were also impressed by its level of quality. Despite being pretty affordable, the sturdy material is nicely stretchy yet opaque, and it never stretched out, shrank, or faded after multiple wears and washes. Our only qualm? We think its adjustable features, like the shoulder straps and gusset snaps, could be better designed, as they felt somewhat flimsy or were sometimes difficult to maneuver.
Who It’s For: We felt that the torso on this bodysuit was on the longer side, but adjustable shoulder straps and three rows of gusset snaps can help you find the perfect fit (though we think wider straps would help prevent “back boob”). Overall, it’s a great option for all bodies looking for a shaping and smoothing effect. However, the bust isn’t very supportive. We found that those with smaller chests could easily go braless, but those with larger busts could not.
Material: Nylon, spandex | Size: S–4XL | Cut: Full coverage | Closure: Adjustable gusset snaps
PHOTO: lululemonWhy We Love It: Many bodysuits are designed with thong bottoms due to their seamless, pantyline-free wear, but not all thongs are created equal. This style is crafted in a super-soft version of Lululemon’s Nulu fabric, which is lightweight, sweat-wicking, and quick-drying (all important features for a tiny strip of fabric that’s designed to, well, really get up in there). All in all, we found the buttery material tight but not too tight, hugging us in all the right places. While we wouldn’t call it shaping (it didn’t cinch our waists), it did have a smoothing effect that’s great for every day. It also passed our quality and durability tests, though we think we’d likely see some pilling on the legging-like material over time.
Who It’s For: This bodysuit fits both curvy and athletic body types well, and we could see it being a universally flattering piece for most bodies. It does have very high-cut leg openings, which could pose an issue if you prefer low or mid-rise bottoms over high-rise. It also doesn’t offer much support in the bust area, so some folks may still want to wear a bra (or, at the very least, nipple covers).
Material: Nylon, Lycra elastane | Size: XXS–1X | Cut: Thong | Closure: Bonded gusset snaps
PHOTO: AmazonWhy We Love It: Bodysuits with full-coverage bottoms are a rarity, as most are designed with thongs to prevent panty lines—but not everyone loves the feel of a thong. This full-coverage option is a great affordable pick for every day, available in a ton of different colors. Despite initially fitting slightly tight on the first wear, we found that the soft and stretchy material is easy to move around in and nicely hugs our curves (though it’s not very sculpting). The material is on the thinner side, but it held up well after multiple washes with no visible shrinking, fading, or pilling.
Who It’s For: If you prefer something with a bit more coverage on the bottom (and don’t need to worry about VPLs), this is a great, affordable option to add to your wardrobe. We found that it runs slightly small and sometimes rode up a bit, especially for curvier types or those with longer torsos, but we think going up a size would solve this issue.

PHOTO: ParadeWhy We Love It: Parade’s Vintage Fit Bodysuit wears like a dream, thanks to its super-soft and smooth eco-friendly cotton alternative—in fact, we forgot we were even wearing a bodysuit! It’s supportive and nicely molds to the body, and because it’s not meant to shape or contour, it’s not at all tight or restrictive. Unlike many other bodysuits we’ve tried, it never seemed to ride up, and because there’s no hardware like gusset snaps or strap adjusters, there was no digging whatsoever. (Just remember that because it doesn’t feature any gusset closures, you’ll need to completely pull it down for bathroom breaks.) Our only qualms? While the bodysuit held its shape and size nicely after multiple washes, we noticed slight snags and fraying.
Who It’s For: Both petite and slender and tall and curvy body types put this bodysuit to the test, and we found that it’s true to size, fitting the bust, torso, and waist perfectly. However, if you prefer a bodysuit that easily snaps open and closed at the crotch, this may not be the best option for you. Still, it’s a reliable piece for every day, whether you need something to wear under a blazer for the office or with a pair of jeans or sweats to run errands.

PHOTO: SpanxWhy We Love It: When temperatures drop and you need an extra layer of warmth underneath your sweaters and blazers, a sturdy bodysuit will serve you well. What we loved most about this Spanx turtleneck was how warm the thick fabric was while remaining breathable—it’s great as a cozy base layer, but you won’t sweat when you head indoors to a heated room. It’s also nice and stretchy, giving us a full range of motion. It’s not meant to be a super compressive or supportive bodysuit, but it does have a slight smoothing and cinching effect that deems this flattering to wear on its own (it doesn’t hurt that it’s extremely soft, too). Quality and durability-wise, we were impressed at how well it held up after wearing and washing multiple times.
Who It’s For: If you need a comfy base layer to add to your wardrobe, this is a very reasonably priced option, given the quality of its material. We tested sizes L and 1X and found that it hugged our curves nicely and that the length of the torso was just the right size for petite and medium heights. However, it does run slightly small, so you may need to size up.

PHOTO: QuinceWhy We Love It: There’s a reason Quince calls this bodysuit the Second Skin; despite having long sleeves, the lightweight and breathable fabric feels as if you’re not wearing anything at all. Super comfortable and nonrestrictive, it’s an overall very flattering and form-fitting style. The wide squared neckline was our favorite part of all, which we found to be equal parts chic and sexy. The overall quality and construction were beautiful, especially given the price point, and we were impressed with how well the material held up throughout the testing period.
Who It’s For: This is a great bodysuit if you’re looking for a simple, inexpensive, yet high-quality style. Based on customer reviews, we sized up and found that it gave us a perfect fit, including for both slender body types and athletic builds with longer torsos. Just keep in mind that it’s not very supportive, so those with larger busts will likely still want to wear a bra.

PHOTO: PinsyWhy We Love It: Given lace’s sometimes itchy reputation, we were delightfully surprised at just how comfortable this bodysuit from Pinsy is. The material is soft and stretchy, and overall, the medium-level shaping left us comfortably sucked in, never restricted, with no digging or pitching around the adjustable straps or crotch whatsoever. This isn’t the most cinching bodysuit of the bunch, but we appreciated how it helped smooth out the waist and tummy area. The quality was certainly there, too, as we noticed no signs of wear after handwashing, though we wish the lining in the bust area was slightly less sheer and thin.
Who It’s For: After testing this bodysuit on curvy and hourglass figures, we found that it’s a good option for anyone looking to smooth out their waist and tummy area. And, although it boasts a built-in bra, it was much better suited to small busts. (It left those of us with larger breasts looking a little too boob-y.)

PHOTO: SkimsWhy We Love It: Another Fits Everybody bodysuit that made our list, this long-sleeve crewneck is just as form-fitting and flattering as our best overall pick. What we appreciate about this one was how it doesn’t cause gapping around our curves, including larger chests, and how nicely it cinches our waists. Of course, it has the same great quality and durability we expect from Skims, scoring high on our various tests. It fits on the tighter side, giving it its smoothing support, but we think sizing up would allow a less restrictive yet flattering overall look.
Who It’s For: This bodysuit fits really nicely around curves, including not gapping at all whatsoever over the bust (which can sometimes make the tummy area appear larger), which is why we think it’s a great choice for those with larger chests. We also thought it provided great bust support with and without a bra, but those with larger cup sizes who prefer the extra support of a bra can wear one comfortably without it showing through the thicker, opaque fabric (though our nipples were noticeable when braless). Those with pear-shaped bodies or wider bottoms may find the fit to be slightly short around the hips and butt, so you may want to size up.

PHOTO: Girlfriend CollectiveWhy We Love It: Minimalist with subtle ribbing-, this is a great everyday bodysuit that can be paired with just about anything. Designed with no closure at the gusset or any adjusting hardware on the straps, we loved how comfortable it was to wear and how it didn’t gap around our curves at all. The soft, stretchy, and sustainably-minded material felt very high-end; it’s fully opaque and has a nice weight to it, but it never felt heavy or restrictive. We also appreciated its subtle slimming effect, light support, and its availability in both thong and brief bottoms. While we did notice a slight shrinking after washing, it stretched back out to its original size once put on—otherwise, we saw no wear and tear.
Who It’s For: Given its expansive size offering and two cut options, we think this is a reliable minimalist essential that would look great on folks of all shapes and sizes. We were impressed with how well it molds to the body and doesn’t gap, and we loved how flattering it looked on our curvy and pear-shaped body types (and could see this having a similar effect on non-curvy body types, as well). We did feel that it was just a smidge too short for longer torsos, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker, as sizing up would resolve this issue.
Material: RPET, spandex | Size: 2XS–6XL | Cut: Brief and thong options | Closure: None
PHOTO: NuudsWhy We Love It: This might just be one of the most comfortable bodysuits on this list. Made from a thick, buttery-soft material and double-lined, it felt amazing on, and while we wouldn’t go as far as to call it stretchy, it holds everything in nicely without being overly constricting. What stands out the most about this style is how well it smooths out the tummy area—something we appreciated for eight-month postpartum bellies and post-brunch food babies alike. It also scored perfect 5s for both quality and durability; it’s obvious that it’s built to last.
Who It’s For: We felt that this suit is more suited to those with short to medium torsos, but otherwise, we think it’s a good option for smoothing out the mid-section, particularly the tummy area. The scoop neck is cut pretty low and definitely shows off some cleavage, which could be an incentive or a dealbreaker, depending on where you’re wearing it. We also noticed that the bust area is not thick enough to go braless, or at least without pasties.
Material: Nylon, spandex | Size: XS–3XL | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: RevolveWhy We Love It: Turtlenecks can sometimes feel restrictive, and what we loved the most about this bodysuit was how freeing and comfortable it felt to wear. It’s incredibly lightweight and stretchy and never felt claustrophobic; at the same time, the material is quite warm and not at all flimsy. It also never rode up or gave us that wedgie feeling, something we think most would appreciate. From a durability standpoint, we washed it after every wear, and the material never lost its integrity. Our only note? Because it’s a stretchy, one-size-fits-most style, the opacity of the fabric varies across different areas of the body—but even so, it wasn’t a dealbreaker for us.
Who It’s For: It’s a great option for anyone seeking a versatile staple that seamlessly transitions between casual and dressy occasions—we wore it during active moments and others where we needed to get dressed up and felt it was an appropriate style for both. The torso was the perfect length for someone 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but we think its overall stretchiness would make it suitable for a wide range of heights and torso lengths. Just keep in mind that one-size-fits-most means the look and feel will vary from body to body.
Material: Nylon, spandex, cotton | Size: OS | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: Abercrombie & FitchWhy We Love It: Made from a brushed cotton jersey with just a bit of stretch, this Abercrombie & Fitch bodysuit is a super-soft, simple basic with plenty of styling versatility. While we noticed it fits slightly small out of the box, the fabric relaxed after the first wash for a super comfortable fit—and even so, the bodysuit still maintained its shape and integrity over time. The fabric also held up pretty well after multiple wears and washes and felt very high quality. It’s not a shaping bodysuit, but we think it’s a very flattering option for everyday wear.
Who It’s For: We tested this bodysuit on a variety of body types and found that it was suitable for both slender and curvy bodies. However, the fit was slightly off in the larger sizes—for example, the shoulders weren’t broad enough for an XL. We thought the scooped neckline was a perfect balance between sexy and elegant, but if you err toward the conservative side, know that it’ll show quite a bit of cleavage if you have a larger bust.
Material: Cotton, elastane | Size: 2XS–XL | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: Hanky PankyWhy We Love It: Lace isn’t always the most comfortable, so when it comes to underwear or layering pieces, it’s crucial that it’s constructed with a soft, stretchy, and non-itchy material. This Hanky Panky style checked all those boxes, the lightweight material molding perfectly to our body without feeling restrictive, while adjustable straps allowed us to find that perfect fit around the bust. It also held up nicely after multiple wears and gentle washes with air drying, showing no signs of pilling, fraying, or tearing (it does tend to pick up lint and pet hair, however, so having a lint-roller on hand would be helpful). Just keep in mind that this style is completely sheer.
Who It’s For: This bodysuit is best used as a layering piece or a sexy little number for the bedroom, given its sheerness—you can wear a bra with it, of course, but the lower cut and thin straps may pose a challenge if you don’t want your bra to poke out at all. It also doesn’t have any closure at the crotch; instead, it needs to be stepped into like a bathing suit, which may be a dealbreaker for some. It also has a pretty limited size range, only offered in sizes small through large.
Material: Nylon, cotton | Size: S–L | Cut: Thong | Closure: None
PHOTO: Free PeopleWhy We Love It: This Free People bodysuit is like your favorite comfy ribbed tank, but sexier. Tagless and seamless, it feels super-soft on the skin and doesn’t dig, and we also found the gusset clasps to be noticeably more comfortable than most others we’ve tried. While it’s not meant to be compressive by any means, it’s nicely form-fitting, and we felt that the thicker ribbed material helped to snatch our waistline. Generally speaking, we were impressed with how cozy this bodysuit was and how well it held up after washing and wearing. Keep in mind that it’s not very bra-friendly, and its very high leg opening may poke out of lower-rise bottoms.
Who It’s For: This bodysuit is comfy, but its lack of support and very low neckline make it more suited for those with small-to-medium chests who don’t mind how revealing it is. The super-deep V-neck and low back also aren’t conducive to wearing a bra, but we found that breast tape helped solve this problem when we needed some lift.
Material: Nylon, elastane | Size: XS/S–M/L | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset clasps
PHOTO: ShopbopWhy We Love It: Simply put, this lace bodysuit from Fleur du Mal is gorgeous. Crafted from beautiful lace, it contains built-in balconette cups to provide the girls some oomph, and it features an opaque jersey thong bottom with a snap closure for extra comfortable (and pantyline-free) wear. While it’s not quite a contouring bodysuit, the thickness of the material did provide some subtle smoothing along the belly. Adjustable straps made it easy to get the right fit, too. Lace is a generally delicate material, but we found this one to be more durable than most. We noticed a bit of wear after handwashing and slight pilling after washing in the machine (though it’s worth noting the brand recommends only handwashing), which is something to be expected with lace. Otherwise, it held its shape and size perfectly.
Who It’s For: If you don’t mind showing a little skin, this is a super pretty (and super sexy) option. We found that the cups provided ample support—even for a size E cup—but the balconette cut does make it very revealing. It’s also quite sheer, but the cups are lined with mesh, meaning you can wear this on a night out without having to free the nipple.
Material: Polyamide, elastane | Size: XS–L | Cut: Thong | Closure: Gusset snaps
PHOTO: CommandoWhy We Love It: Another pick from Commando’s Ballet collection that we were extremely impressed with, this style toes the line between a basic bodysuit and a night-out top. The stretchy material makes for a super comfortable fit, even in the arms—which is saying a lot considering its off-the-shoulder silhouette. Breathable, seamless, and opaque, the quality is also top-notch, holding its shape throughout the testing period, and even after multiple washes, we saw no signs of shrinking, fading, fraying, or pilling. It’s not quite a contouring bodysuit, so don’t expect the same type of shaping effect as some of the others on this list, but we found it to be an all-around flattering and functional style worth its slightly higher price point.
Who It’s For: If you want a nonbasic basic you can wear for casual and dressy occasions alike, this style is for you. The arms may sit a little short for taller folks with longer arms, but we don’t think it’s a deal-breaker in any way. Those with larger chests will likely still want the support of a strapless bra.

What to Keep in Mind
- Material: Like most basics, bodysuits are available in a wide range of materials, all of which will influence how the bodysuit fits and feels, and any contouring benefits it may have. “Some can provide shaping, while others create a body-skimming tucked-in tee look,” says Quince Senior Buyer Sidney Bonner. If you’re leaning toward soft, breathable, and non-restricting, Bloomingdale’s Fashion Director Janelle Lloyd recommends opting for styles made from jersey, while size-inclusive stylist Michaela Leitz suggests cotton blends, modal, bamboo, or moisture-wicking polyester, with a percentage of spandex to provide a true second-skin fit.
- Bottom Silhouette: Bodysuits come in a range of bottom silhouettes but are most commonly designed with a thong. “Thong bottoms are a little more forgiving in terms of body length, as they tend to stretch more than bikini bottoms, and it lends itself better to no visible panty lines,” says Commando Design Director Nadia Nour. It’s also important to look into the leg cut, as a high leg can add an extra layer of invisibility, adds Bonner. At the same time, something with more coverage can provide more shaping and smoothing benefits. Bottoms aside, there’s also the sleeve length and neckline to consider, which will vary based on what occasion (or season) you’ll be wearing it. Not sure where to start? “Opt for cuts that highlight your best features, whether that’s a plunging neckline, high-leg design, or something more modest for versatility and comfort,” says Leitz.
- Gusset Closures: Closures like snaps or clasps along the gusset offer practicality and ease for all-day wear. “These are best if you’d rather avoid having to bare all during bathroom breaks,” notes Lloyd. Even so, some may find pull-on styles with no closures to be more comfortable all around. “They also deliver a seamless, smooth look under clothing,” adds Leitz.
- Shaping, Smoothing, and Compression: Many bodysuits can double as shapewear, smoothing and contouring the body with different levels of compression and support. “Bodysuits are smooth and stay in place better than control bottoms,” notes Nour. While shaping materials like the ones listed above will influence the level of compression, adjustable straps are another feature to look for. “Adjustable strap placements will help keep the bodysuit in place and hidden beneath multiple styles,” she says, adding that styles with four-way stretch enable the bodysuit to move with you without the need for adjustments. Of course, if you’re looking for something comfy to throw on with jeans that you won’t need to fuss about keeping tucked in, these benefits may not be as important to you.
Your Questions, Answered
How do you style a bodysuit?
As a basic, bodysuits make a great foundation for any outfit, and their versatility provides infinite ways to style them. “They can be styled like your favorite top, but the benefit is that they will always stay put,” says Nour.
Lloyd likes to pair hers with a range of bottoms, from relaxed denim to midi skirts and trouser pants. “For a more casual look, I’d recommend high-waisted jeans or shorts, and for an evening out, you can style one with loose trousers and heels,” adds Bonner. For a polished head-to-toe look, Nour recommends pairing yours with a matching skirt.
“Don’t shy away from layering, as bodysuits make a seamless base under sheer tops or oversized sweaters, providing a smooth silhouette that keeps your outfit looking refined and put-together,” adds Leitz.
What underwear can you wear with a bodysuit?
The great thing about bodysuits? You don’t have to wear any underwear at all, notes Nour, as many are designed with underwear-like cotton or microfiber gussets. “Of course, you can always wear your favorite underwear under bodysuits if you prefer a little extra security,” she adds.
“Seamless underwear is often the best choice, as it minimizes visible lines and creates a sleek silhouette underneath tight-fitting bodysuits,” says Leitz, adding that thongs are another great option if you need to avoid VPLs. “They offer minimal coverage but ensure your outfit looks flawless from every angle.” If you want added support and shaping, she recommends pairing your bodysuit with high-waisted briefs or shapewear. “These will smooth out any lines and provide an extra layer of confidence by enhancing your natural curves and offering gentle compression where needed.”
